HUB & HEUY Presents: Metalnight "Back in Black"

TAAKE (No)

TAAKE | HOEST

In 1993, Ørjan Stedjeberg, now known as Ulvhedin Høst (often spelt Hoest), formed the first version of the band Taake under the name Thule, together with Svartulv, who was only twelve years old at the time. Thule released two demos; "Der Vinterstormene Raste" 1993 and "Omfavnet Av Svarte Vinger (Embraced By Black Wings)" 1994. Somewhere between the release of the latter demo and "Manndaudsvinter" in 1995, the band transformed from Thule to Taake which was more representative of the band and the area where Høst was from; the mountains of Bergen, Norway. Shortly after this release a 7" EP was released in 1996 called "Koldbrann i Jesu Marg," which would be the last demo recording that Taake would release.

The first full-length album "Nattestid Ser Porten Vid (Night Sees the Wide Gate)" was released by Wounded Love Records in 1999. The album was written entirely by Høst but he brought in a session musician, Tundra to perform bass and drums. It was recorded throughout 1997 and 1998 at Grieghallen. "Nattestid..." is part I of a trilogy, all the writing on the CD and lyrics in the booklet are written in runes. All of the lyics are sung in Norwegian. This album is now known as a classic.

The second installment of the trilogy "Over Bjoergvin Graater Himmerik (Heaven Cries over Bjoergvin)" was released in 2002. Again a seven song concept album, the theme for "...Bjoergvin..." is death (Bjoergvin is the former name of Bergen). On this record, Hoest surrounded himself with a band for the record: C. Corax on Guitars, Keridwen on bass, and Mutt (Gaahlskagg, Trelldom, Sigfader) on drums.

The final installment of the trilogy was released in 2005 by Dark Essence Records. Entitled "Hordalands Doedskvad (Hordaland's Deathchant)" it adhered to the 7 song format (representing the 7 mountains surrounding Bergen) of the first two records, but showed a change in style (Hordaland is a county in Norway). While the first two records in the trilogy were clearly 80s metal influenced, this album was performed in a more traditional black metal style which was reminiscent of Enslaved, Bathory and early Mayhem. "...Doedskvad" also differs from the other in that it features a number of guest musicians. These include the infamous Nattefrost from Carpathian Forest, Taipan (Orcustus), and Nordavind (ex-Carpathian Forest), as well as others. Following this release of this record Taake has had some minor releases, and played a few festivals (most notably Hole In The Sky Festival in Norway, with Ivar Bjørnson of Enslaved on guitars), but according to the official website they are "on ice for awhile."

Preceding the still 2006/2007 European tour, Taake revamped their official homepage, moving away from the defunct site. Following the infamous show in Essen, the band have been removed from several festivals and have taken much fire. It wouldn't be acquainted with publicity if it was happened thereby - Lava who has been bassist since 2002 left the band. The new website has also served as a place for Blabbermouth to get all the latest inflammatory statements from Hoest.

On September 8, 2008, Hoest announced on his homepage that he had recorded the fourth Taake album, simply titled "Taake". The album was recorded for Hoest's own label Svartekunst Produksjoner and is distributed via Dark Essence Records.

HORNA (Fin)

HORNA

The sinister werewolf kult of Horna was born in 1993 by Shatraug and Moredhel. The hammer of uncreation, Gorthaur, joined in 1994 and the first release "Varjoissa" was created in 1995. Joined by Satanic Warmaster (prior known as Nazgul) in 1996, Horna set out the course lead by "Hiidentorni" all the way upon the grim splendour of "Sudentaival". In 2001 Satanic Warmaster was replaced by Corvus unveiling an entirely new era in our existence. In the summer of 2003 we found our current lead guitarist Saturnus and the unholy trinity of Shatraug-Corvus-Saturnus was born, a revelation that clouded any previous settlements. Even when we saw it necessary to replace Gorthaur our thrice cursed black core kept going on, with strenght anew.

ANGANTYR (Dk)

Angantyr started as a synth/ambient project in 1997.
It quickly developed into a raw blackmetal band, and in 1998 the first demotape "Endeløs" was recorded.
"Endeløs" contains 5 tracks of ear-mutilating blackmetal.
The debut CD "Kampen Fortsætter" was recorded in the year 2000.
The sound has improved, and the first song ever recorded "Stilhedens Larm" is included,
Along with a re-recording of "Da frostvind blæste" from the first demo.
In 2001 The second demotape "Nordens Stolte Krigere" was recorded in a shed in the forest of Egebæksvang.
In October 2002 the CD "Sejr" was recorded, and supposed to be released on "Inner Evil Productions" in 2003.
After I sent the Master-CD and artwork, I never heard from them again.
I then made a deal with Danish "BBSA" to release "Sejr" in 1000 copies in July 2004.
"Sejr" brings you 8 songs of harsh yet melodic Blackmetal, which includes 2 previously
unreleased songs originally recorded in 1999, but re-recorded for the "Sejr" album
Northern Silence Productions has released both demos on 2x10" vinyl with a gatefold cover in december 2005
3 live members were found and 3 concerts were played in September 2006 while material for the album "Hævn" was written.
"Hævn" was released in april 2007 by Det Germanske Folket, and 5 concerts was played in 2007.
Northern Silence Productions released the Angantyr/Nasheim split album in September 2007.
The new live lineup was presented at a special appearance in Grosserlach, Germany 12.09.09
The fourth full-length album "Svig" will be released by Northern Silence Productions in May 2010.

DEN SAAKALDTE (No)

Den Saakaldte is a Norwegian black metal supergroup, founded in 2006 by Mikael Sykelig, featuring members of Shining, 1349 and Dødheimsgard, among others. They played their first gig at Inferno Festival in 2008, headlining the John Dee stage on the second day. The reactions were positive.Their debut album, Øl, Mørke og Depresjon, which was released in March 2008 through Eerie Art records, has been described as "a quite unique sounding album," as well as "there's space for aggression and brutality, but also for dark atmospheres and ancient feelings."The band released their second album, entitled All Hail Pessimism, on February 2, 2009.

PANTHEON I (No)

Formed in late 2002 and hailing from the city of Oslo in Norway, Pantheon I is an extreme metal band that combines brutality, aggression and speed with heart-wrenching melancholy. Rather than resorting to the use of synths with string samples, the symphonic aspects of their music are highlighted by the use of the cello. The current, and very sensual, line-up is composed of KVEBEK on guitar and vocals (DEN SAAKALDTE, ex-1349), SAGSTAD on guitar (TROLLFEST, SARKOM), T.R.S. on bass (1349, DEN SAAKALDTE), MADS G on drums (THE ALL SEEING I, ZEENON), and LIVE JULIANNE on cello.

PANTHEON I’s 2003 demo received an excellent response from the metal underground, and was followed by a DIY style 7” in 2004. “Atrocity Divine”, the first full length was released, or should we say “hijacked” by a Japanese underground label. The band themselves don’t even own copies of this album, since the smartass label more or less disappeared, but every once in a while a copy will turn up at concession stands at festivals.

In 2007 PANTHEON I signed to Candlelight Records, and released their second full-length album, “The Wanderer And His Shadow”. The album was released in both the USA and Europe, and received great reviews. Following the release of “The Wanderer And His Shadow”, PANTHEON I focused on taking their fast and brutal music directly to the masses, playing outside of Norway for the first time when they accompanied MAYHEM as the main support band for 8 gigs in France. Since then they have played several one-off gigs, including the Interregnum festival in Germany, and the Jalometalli Festival (with SATYRICON, MAYHEM etc.) in Oulu, Finland. In October 2008 Pantheon I headlined their first tour abroad with a 4 gig mini-tour in Finland

2009 has been an eventful year for PANTEHON I. In January they toured Finland as main support for KEEP OF KALESSIN on a 4-gig tour - which felt like a 4-month tour due to excessive drinking, hotel refurnishing and other drunken games, not to mention man-love on a high level. The week after returning home the band recorded the song “I’ll Come Back As Fire”, which features in the American horror film “Someone’s Knocking At The Door”. They also appeared at the Inferno Festival in Oslo, and wrote and recorded their third full-length album “Worlds I Create” released by Candlelight in July. The motivation behind writing this album? Quite simply to give every religious believer a kick in the groins, and every lover of extreme and melancholic metal a huge boner.
